To put pressure on the coalition government to undo the injustice meted to Jammu region by shifting of AIIMS, the coordination committee’s chain hunger strike entered third day on Sunday. The committee comprising of prominent people of Jammu province is demanding setting up of the institution in Jammu region as promised by the government.
On Sunday the representatives of Jammu Chambers of Commerce and Industries sat on strike. JCCI President Rakesh Gupta said that people from across cross sections of society were supporting this demand, and had committed to support the peoples movement to end injustice with this region. The AIIMS Coordination Committee comprises of a large number of social and political as well as trade bodies of Jammu, and they are spearheading the demand for setting up AIIMs here.
The committee had organized back to back bandhs in Jammu region to press for this demands, and has also started an indefinite dharna and chain hunger strike led by J&K High Court Bar Association. The hunger strike is being organized in front of the statue of Maharaja Hari Singh at Tawi Bridge. The committee members also said that they want to remain peaceful, and agitate against this injustice despite the fact that a large number of youth organization want to intensify the protests. If the demand is not met then the stir could have other ramifications as well.
