International Literacy Day (ILD) will be observed on 8th September in New Delhi by the National Literacy Mission Authority (NLMA) by organizing a special function, informs a PIB release.
The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee will be the Chief Guest at the ILD function that will be presided over by the Union Human Resource Development Minister, Smriti Irani.
Prior to the function, KRITI Exhibition-2014 is being organized that going to showcase the products crafted by Jan Shikshan Sansthan.
“A literate society is an essential precondition for achieving social and economic advancement. There has been a significant decline in the absolute number of non-literates during the last decade. However, despite the number of significant programmes, taken up since independence to eradicate illiteracy, the absolute number of non-literates continues to be very high and calls for concerted efforts to make people literate,” stated the release.
