ITR filing date likely to extends to July 10


New Delhi:The last date to file an income tax return (ITR) for this year might extend. The last date to file ITR by individuals is July 31, 2019. But the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued a notification, where it has extended the deadline for employers to file tax deducted at source (TDS) returns to June 30 and the last date to issue Form 16 to employees to July 10, 2019.

It may be noted that if the employees receive their Form 16 by July 10, then there will be very little time for the taxpayers to file their respective returns, leaving only 21 days for them, according to a report.

Since last year, there a penalty for income tax returns after the due date. Therefore, following this CBDT notification, last date to file ITRs for individuals may get extended too. Naveen Wadhwa chartered accountant and manager, Taxman told ET that, “The CBDT has extended the due date of filing of Form 24Q, i.e., TDS return in respect of salary for the financial year 2018-19 from May 31, 2019, to June 30, 2019. The due date has been extended considering the latest changes made by the tax department in Form 24Q and to redress genuine hardship of employers in timely filing of TDS return in revised format of Form 24Q.”

With effect from May 12, 2019, the CBDT has also issued a notification for amendments in Form 24Q and Form 16 (TDS certificate in respect of salary income). According to the new format, every employer has to provide a detailed salary break-up, exempt allowances and deductions claimed and allowed the employee.
