J&K : Rain, snow break over 3 months’ dry spell; Srinagar, Jammu record coldest day
JAMMU, Nov 15 : The rain in entire Northern region and snowfall on the higher reaches of Kashmir and some parts of Jammu, today brought big relief to the people after long dry spell of over three months while smog continued to affect train services in the Northern region.
The thundershowers in most parts of the State and snowfall at the higher reaches late this evening brought down the temperature considerably in both the capital cities and other places in the entire State, forcing people to clad themselves in heavy woolen clothes to protect themselves from cold wave.
Meteorological Department said there is forecast of snow and rain in next 24 hours in Kashmir even as Srinagar recorded coldest day of the season so far. It said that weather will improve after November 15.
Director MeT Department Sonam Lotus told Excelsior that there is forecast of light to moderate snow and rainfall in higher reaches and plains of Kashmir and Jammu during next 24 hours.
He said the visibility in Northern region will also improve with this rain and the train services will also show some improvement in arrival timings.
According to MeT, the summer capital Srinagar recorded coldest day of the season today as maximum temperature went down five notches below normal. The Srinagar recorded 11.0 degree Celsius temperature, against yesterday’s 18. 2, while night temperature settled at 2.9 degree Celsius. “11.0 degree Celsius maximum temperature is so far season’s lowest in Srinagar that we have recorded,” the MeT official said.
The winter capital city, Jammu recorded the season’s lowest 23.6 degree Celsius (Maximum) temperature against 28.2 degree C, hardly two days ago.
The minimum temperature in Jammu remained 14.2 degree C. Holy township of Katra recorded a maximum temperature of 21.2 degree C and minimum 11.9 degree C; Bhaderwah maximum 18.6 degree C and minimum 5.7 degree C while Banihal town of Ramban recorded a maximum of 15.3 degree C and minimum 3.6 degree Celsius temperature today.
A Northern Railway spokesman said that smog continued to badly hit train services in Northern region and many trains are arriving several hours late in Jammu and holy township of Katra.
