A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi abolished the use of red beacons from all vehicles, BJP ministers in Jammu acted quickly and removed the beacons from their vehicles.
On Thursday, Jammu and Kashmir Speaker and MLA Gandhi Nagar, Kavinder Gupta removed the sirens and were seen travelling in vehicles without red beacons.
“Almost all our cabinet colleagues, including myself, have removed the red beacon from our cars today. The Chief Secretary along with many other bureaucrats did the same thing,” Kavinder said on his arrival at the secretariat in his beacon-less vehicle.
The move is aimed at putting an end to the VIP culture, ubiquitous in India. On April 19, the Centre announced a notification under which only emergency vehicles will be permitted to use red beacons from May 1.
