Jammu — The safai karamcharis of Jammu municipality carried out a protest demonstration outside the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) complex for ignoring their long – pending demands. The municipality workers went on a strike beginning today.
The protesters demanded that NGOs must be dissolved. One of them said, “We demand that the NGOs must be eliminated and all workers should be directly incorporated in the JMC.” He added, “This has been our demand since 2005 but the Govt. has been delaying it.”
The protesters had to say there’s a dire need for reorganising this sector. He continued, “The organisational structure must be reformed which will enable our daily-wage workers to get a permanent place in the department.” He added, “33 drivers have been longing for a permanent place while they had been at it for 11 years.”
It is pertinent to mention that PM Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan can only be made successful when the municipality workers are attended seriously. The protesters accused the municipal corporation of carelessness and said that the J&K Govt. is slacking to fulfill its duty.
Moreover, the sites of garbage littered across the city is not insignificant. The strike by workers of municipality will make the situation even worse as the garbage and untreated sewages can lead to epidemic outbreak. The Govt. must take action to placate these workers before the conditions worsen.
