JAMMU: During a six-hour long anti-encroachment drive carried out by the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) here on Monday, about 387 Kanals of prime JDA land falling under Khasra number 351, 352 and others, located at Village Chap Sardar Attar Singh, Tehsil Mandal, Jammu was retrieved by the Khilaf Warzi /Revenue Wing of JDA under supervision of the Director Land Management, Sanjay Gupta, Despite strong resistance by the residents.
A team of JDA officials led by Shruti Bhardwaj, Tehsildar JDA Zone-B and assisted by Ramesh Kumar Bakshi, Tehsildar Mandal and Arjun Singh, Naib Tehsildar JDA conducted the drive while Fida Hussain, Naib Tehsildar Mandal remained present on spot as the Duty Magistrate. Khilafwarzi Wing of JDA led by Inspector Ramesh Kumar also participated in the drive.
After the anti-encroachment drive, boundary pillars with Khasra numbers marked on them and JDA sign-boards were also erected over demarcated JDA land.
Despite intense public resistance, the drive concluded successfully with full co-operation extended by Vinay Sharma, SP South and Dr Sunniya Ashkoor Wani, SDPO South.
During the drive, some of the residents also fainted and some were taken into preventive custody, police sources said, adding that ‘our job was to assist the JDA in their anti-encroachment drive, which they carried out today.
Police also cane charged the protesting residents during which some received minor injuries.
The people of aforesaid area expressed resentment against Government and JDA officials for forcibly retrieving the land. They further alleged that no prior notices were issued by JDA and they were forcibly thrown out of the land.
The people further alleged that they own possession of aforesaid land for last 40 years.
Expressing concern on anti-encroachment drive conducted by JDA, the former Minister, Ch Sukhnandan asked JDA authorities to first retrieve encroached land from people residing in Bathindi area of Jammu.
