In a broad daylight murder, a 17-year-old girl was stabbed to death by her jilted lover at the Grain Market in Sector 26 here this afternoon.
The victim has been identified as Pooja, a resident of Sector 56. She was a vegetable vendor at the grain market.Sources said the accused, Sunil (19), a resident of EWS Colony, Dhanas, came to the victim’s stall around 12.30 pm today and asked her to accompany him. However, the girl refused to go, which led to an altercation between them.
Following this, the accused pulled out a knife from his pocket and stabbed the victim on her neck. The accused then fled the spot.After getting information, police teams reached the spot and found the victim in a pool of blood. The girl was immediately taken to the PGI where she later succumbed to her injuries.The police have registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Sector 26 police station.
A few hours later, the accused was arrested from near the Timber market.The police said the knife with which the victim was stabbed had been recovered. Blood-stained clothes of the accused had also been recovered.The accused also sells vegetables at the grain market.
Girl was avoiding accused for past few days
Victim’s friend Jyoti, who was present at the spot, said Sunil was annoyed with Pooja for the past few days, following which their relation turned sour. Pooja had started avoiding Sunil.
The victim is survived by her parents and a younger brother. “The family was dependant on Pooja who used to earn livelihood by selling vegetables,” sources said.
Knife used in crime recovered
The police said the knife with which the victim was stabbed had been recovered. Blood-stained clothes of the accused had also been recovered by the police.
