J&K : Court awarded 10 yr rigorous imprisonment, fine to drug peddler
JAMMU, Oct 31 : Principal Sessions Judge Kathua, MA Chowdhary today awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of R. 1 lakh to a Charas smuggler namely Saudagar Mal @ Rodu, S/O Bhuri Ram, R/O Bhagocha Chak (Bhaiya) Tehsil Hiranagar, District Kathua.
While awarding sentence, Principal Sessions Judge Kathua, MA Chowdhary observed that the drug menace is eating into the vitals of the society by consuming the younger generation and it has penetrated its tentacles into the youth, who are future of this country, causing incalculable loss in terms of human resources besides rendering the drug addicts to a miserable life struggling between life and death.
“This menace also breeds other crimes in the society. In this backdrop, the offences under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act are required to be dealt with an iron hand and when a case is proved against a criminal, he is required to be dealt with sternly”.
The convict herein has been in possession of commercial quantity of the cannabis, which means that he was not an addict, who had kept the cannabis for his personal use, but it was certainly meant for commercial use to be sold among the vulnerable sections of the society.
According to the police case Police party from Police Station Lakhanpur, headed by ASI Gangu Ram on 08.08.2016, from new Ravi Bridge Lakhanpur, sent a docket to SHO Police Station Lakhanpur, that at about 4.00 PM, one person came walking from new Ravi Bridge from Madhopur Punjab holding a bag in his hand, who tried to hide himself on seeing the police party.
He was intercepted and during search, one-kg of Charas was recovered from his possession and he was taken into custody.
The accused was lodged in District Jail Kathua in pursuance to the Judgement passed by the Principal District and Session Judge Kathua with special power of Special Judge under NDPS Act.
