JK to establish permanent NIFT campus at Ompora; Project cost of Rs 325 cr to be shared by Centre, State Govt on 90:10 basis

SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 02: In a major initiative towards setting up advanced skill development training institutions in the State, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has formally set into motion the process for establishing a permanent campus of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Srinagar.

On the initiative of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the state government has conveyed its commitment to the Union Ministry of Textiles to chip in with Rs 67.47 crore as the state share for the Rs 325 crore NIFT project for which 160 kanals of land have been earmarked at Industrial Estate Ompora, on the outskirts of Srinagar.

Pertinently, the Government of India has, on the intervention of the Prime Minister, agreed to share the infrastructure cost of the proposed Fashion Technology Institute on 90:10 basis.

The Institute is planning to start regular undergraduate courses of 4-year duration in Fashion Design and Fashion Communication from the next academic session from the existing temporary campus at IT Park Rangreth till its permanent campus becomes functional at Industrial Estate Ompora.

The modalities for making NIFT Srinagar fully functional were worked out during the visit of the Union Secretary Textiles, Dr S K Panda and Joint Secretary (Textiles) and DG NIFT, Mr Navraj Goyal to the State last month.
