J&K Weather Updates : Fresh WD hits region
A fresh Western Disturbance (WD) has hit the region which could result in light rain or snow during the next 24 hours in the Kashmir Valley where there was some improvement in the night temperature though it was still below freezing point.
However, due to cloudy sky coupled with icy cold winds, the day also become chilly in the Valley.
Kargil, on Srinagar-Leh national highway, closed for winter months due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions, remained coldest in the region at minus 20 degree, though it was 0.6 degree more than Wednesday. Leh, however, recorded about two degree drop in minimum temperature and settled at minus 16.6 degree against Wednesday’s minus 14.2 degree. The sky would be cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperature would be around 2 degree and minus 12 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in Leh, a Met department spokesman told UNI Thursday afternoon.
He said there could be light rain or snow in Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. However, weather will improve and will remain dry from January 6 onwards.
As the WD hit the region, the minimum temperature recorded some improvement in the valley though it was still below freezing point. However, the day become chilly due to cloudy sky and cold winds.
Gulmarg was the coldest in the Valley though the minimum temperature recorded surge by one notch. Against Wednesday’s minus 7 degree, it was minus 6 degree minimum temperature.
Health resort of Pahalgam also witnessed increase by over two degree in the night temperature. Against Wednesday’s minus 6.6 degree night temperature, it was minus 4.5 degree, Met spokesman said. Qazigund in south Kashmir was the only place in the valley where the minimum temperature recorded drop. Against Wednesday’s minus 4.4 degree and it was minus 2.9 degree.
Though Srinagar also witnessed slight improvement, parts of Dal Lake were frozen again partially near banks and in the interior of the water body. Against Wednesday’s minus 4.1 degree, the minimum temperature surged and settled at minus 3.9 degree. The sky would be generally cloudy with possibility of light snow or rain during the next 24 hours in the city when the maximum and minimum temperature would be 7 degree and minus 1 degree.
