J&K’s women’s commission gets Ex-BBC journalist as Chairperson


Jammu and Kashmir government today appointed former BBC broadcaster Nayeema Ahmad Mehjoor as the chairperson of the State Commission for Women (SCW) after the State’s General Administration Department issued the order.

Mehjoor has worked in London with BBC’s Urdu Service for many years before returning to Kashmir. Replacing National Conference MLA from Habba Kadal, Shamima Firduous, Mehjoor will serve as the chairperson SCW. Mehjoor was appointed as media advisor of PDP last year.

Also, Mehjoor was booked by police under the now repealed Section 66(A) IT Act for allegedly inciting violence in Kashmir through a Facebook post. The case was however, not admitted by the concerned court.
