LC Panel reviews functioning of Agri deptt Stresses for proper implementation of flagship programmes

Naresh Gupta-10JAMMU: The Department Related Standing Committee (DRSC-IV) of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council today reviewed the functioning of Agriculture, Horticulture and Floriculture departments at a meeting held here today.
The Committee which met here today under the Chairmanship of MLC, Mr Naresh Kumar Gupta held detailed discussion on the functioning of these departments and stressed the need for strengthening the monitoring mechanism and proper implementation of various Centrally Sponsored Schemes so that the benefits of these schemes percolate down to the needy farmers.
The Committee called for devising a well-knit policy to ensure timely fertilizers, seeds and pesticidesto the farmers across the State. The Agriculture, Horticulture and Floriculture are the important sectors responsible for improving the GDP growth of the State and Government should take suitable steps to further tone up their functioning.
The Committee stressed the need for strengthening the existing marketing infrastructure to give impetus to the marketing activities in the State. The Committee directed the Horticulture Department to identify new areas of expansion to tap the horticulture potential with creation of facilities of mandis for the local disposal of produces. The Committee suggested expanding the activities in the erstwhile Doda, where lot of potential is available. The Committee also stressed the need for more facilities to the farmers at Delhi and other metropolitan cities so that they can undertake their business activities hustle free.
Legislators, Mr Bashir Ahmed Magray, Mr Nurboo Gialchan, Mr Sham Lal Bhagat and Dr Shehnaz Ganai were also present in the meeting.
Commissioner Secretary, Agriculture, Mr Asgar Samoon briefed the Committee about the activities of the departments and steps initiated for implementation of centrally sponsored flagships programmes for the farmers in the State.
Among others the meeting was attended by Secretary Floriculture, Mr Sanjeev Verma, Director, Horticulture, Jammu, Mr A K Sharma, Director, Floriculture, Jammu Mr K.K. Sharma, Director Sericulture, Mr Dhanbir Singh, Director, Horticulture, Kashmir, Mr Sonam Narboo, besides senior officers and officials of concerned departments and Council Secretariat.
