LMD Udhampur tightens noose on Private Schools for unfair trade practices

Udhampur, April 5: On the directions of District Development Commissioner, Udhampur, Dr. Shahid Iqbal Choudhary , a Committee headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur Sh. Angrez Singh Rana along with Assistant Controller Legal Metrology Sh. Jaideep Singh Sambyal and Chief Education Officer, Udhampur Sh. Bishan Singh launched a special drive against private schools for unfair trade practices by promptly acting on the complaints received from various quarters viz parents of the students of the Private Schools of Udhampur city.

The complainants alleged that the Private schools operating in Udhampur city are hand in glove with the book sellers and forced the students to buy the books from the premises of the school or a particular book seller in the market at exorbitant rates. The complainants also alleged that most of the books are being sold by pasting inflated stickers of higher rate on the original MRP which is lesser.

The Committee inspected the renowned schools of the city namely Happy Model Higher Secondary School Udhampur, Little Flower Convent School, Brahmrishi Bawara Shanti Vidhya Peeth Udhampur, K.C. Gurukul and many other schools. On inspection of renowned book sellers namely National Book Depot , Gupta Stationary Mart, Gupta News Agency, Central Book Depot, Gokul Traders Udhampur , it was found that they have nexus with the schools and the complaints were found to be genuine.

Team visited the Book shop namely National Book Depot at Gole Market Udhampur and found that the said book seller is selling books by pasting inflated stickers of higher rate on the original MRP which is lesser , for Happy Model School and inspector Legal Metrology issued seizure notice to the offender for violation of Legal Metrology Act.

Further, the team visited the Gupta Stationary Mart and found that the Practical Note Books are sold without any MRP to the students which is a violation of Legal Metrology and is booked by the Legal Meteorology Department accordingly. Later on the team visited Gupta News Agency Bus Stand and found the above mentioned violations by the Book Seller for Little Flower Convent School. Also the KC Gurukul School Management and the Book Seller Sahitya Sangam Kachi Chowni, Jammu were booked for charging more from the students by selling the books in the premises of the school and the students are forced to be duped by school authorities by adopting the similar malpractices. Brahmrishi Bawara Shanti Vidhya Peeth and Gokul Book Seller was booked for selling School Diaries without MRP and students of the schools are pressurized to pay exorbitant rates to the book seller.

Moreover, overcharging is an offence under Consumer Protection Act-1987.
