Srinagar, January 21: The youth storming encounter sites to divert the attention of security forces is a very common practice in Kashmir. It is seen on the streets of Kashmir almost every second day. This has been going on for over five years now. It is a reversal of the earlier phase of insurgency when residents used to flee.
In a latest similar incident that took place on Wednesday in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, militants, initially believed to be two or three in number, were trapped by security forces in Naina village. As the encounter proceeded with intense exchange of gunfire, the locals began throwing stones on police and paramilitary personnel to help the terrorists.
According to a police spokesman, “During the operation, a large number of people came towards the site and threw stones on security force personnel.”
He said that one police officer and 16 security force personnel were injured in the clashes with protesters. Also, a police vehicle was set ablaze. A civilian was also killed along with a militant. One militant is also believed to have escaped, but the news is yet to be verified.
