Mehbooba Mufti, who has been authorized by the Peoples Democratic Party to take on the mantle of her late father called upon her party legislators, and other leaders to strengthen the rank and file on Sunday evening when she met them for the first time after the death of Mufti. She also broke down a couple of times while addressing the party leaders, and the meeting turned emotional. There was also no discussion about the formation of the new government although it was expected that she would take oath after the four day mourning period was over.
With Mehboona not willing to take oath there is strong speculation in the state that there could be realignment of political forces as the PDP leader was not keen to continue the alliance with BJP. On Sunday Congress president Sonia Gandhi also called upon Mehbooba which lent support to the rumours that PDP might be thinking of new political alliances after the death of senior Mufti.
Although the Congress said that visit by Sonia Gandhi was on a personal note, and there was no politics involved in it but reluctance of PDP leader to form the government has fuelled rumours that she might be open to other options as well.
