Mehbooba Mufti, the firebrand daughter of Chief Minister Mufti Mohd Sayeed is most likely to be the first woman chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir as enough hints were given by Sayeed to pave the way for her annointment to the top post. Addressing a press conference, Mufti while replying to a question said that Mehbooba’s elevation to the top post was part of the democratic process, and it would be decided by the party when the issue comes up.
Mufti however said that his daughter worrked in the field, and had a good connection with people, workers, and the masses across the state. The statement by the CM is a clear indicator that Ms Mufti is likely to be elevated soon to the top post in the state, and right environment is being created to ensure this transition is smooth. Even before the elevation of Mehbooba to the post of CM, speculation is already rife that there could be major changes in the government once she takes over.
Sources said that there could be major changes in the cabinet as the new leader is likely to induct new ministers, and barring few could replace the entire cabinet. A decision in this regard is likely to be taken soon but there is also apprehension in the party circles that decision to install Mehbooba might not go well with other party leaders. There are several leaders in the party who are also against PDP’s coalition with BJP. Mehbooba’s likely elevation to the top post in the state will also have an impact on the coalition government as it is not known how acceptable she would be to the saffron party. While Mufti is seen as a mature leader in political circles, whereas her image is more of being brash but her connect with grass roots will help her in the long run.
