Two militants killed in Kashmir gunfight

Srinagar, April 21: According to fresh reports,  Two militants were killed on Thursday in a gunfight with security forces in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

“Two militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces in Patushai village today,” a senior police official told media persons here.

“Security forces including Rashtriya Rifles (RR) troops and the special operations group (SOG) of state police started an operation in the early hours of Thursday morning after receiving information about the presence of a group of militants.”

“The exact identity of the slain militants is being established. Search operation is ongoing in the area,” the official added.

The gunfight is on and it was earlier thought that the militants belong to Lashkar-e-Toiba. Unconfirmed reports say that one more militant is still holed up.

The encounter broke out between militants and in the forest area of Lolab in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district early Thursday morning.

SSP Kupwara Ijaz Ahmad Bhat said that the army’s 28 RR and SOG of JK police cordoned off Gujarpati Potushai forest area today morning after inputs about the presence of militants.

The militants, believed to be two to three in number, hiding in the woods opened fire after being challenged by the forces, triggering a gunfight.
