12:30 PM: Militant in Udhampur attack captured, hostages freed

A militant involved in an ambush on a BSF convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar highway on Wednesday has been captured, authorities said. The second militant was caught alive by Village Defence Committee at Chirdi Village of Sambroli, Udhampur.

Militants had attacked the Border Security Force convoy killing two troopers and injuring 11. The attackers then fled to a village where they took three people hostage.

Security forces encircled the village and later freed the hostages.

 “Three people, including two BSF troopers and a militant, were killed while six BSF troopers were injured in this attack. They were shifted to hospital for treatment,” the officer said.

The officer also said senior BSF troopers and police officers have rushed to the spot, which is 65 kilometres away from here in Udhampur district.

The officer said that the Jammu-Srinagar national highway is cleared for traffic each day by road-opening parties who employ high-tech equipment and sniffer dogs to ensure there are no explosive devices planted anywhere by the militants.

“In the wake of today’s attack, we have deployed additional forces at mountain peaks overlooking the highway,” the officer added.

All essentials of life and security force deployments are routed to the landlocked Kashmir Valley through the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.


9: 45 am: A total of six jawans have been injured


9:30 am: A total of four militants are estimated to have attacked the convoy out of which one has been killed and three are still engaging in gun battle with Indian armed forces.

One BSF jawan has lost his life in this attack; two BSF personnel are injured and a CRPF constable, Mohammed Hanief has also been injured.

“Militants fired at a BSF convoy at Narsu Nallah on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway today (Wednesday),” a senior police officer said here.
