Two Policemen were injured in the attack, out of which one later succumbs to his injuries.
Naveed Jat alias Abu Hanzula is believed to be an LeT district commander, a Pakistani militant, and was arrested in a joint operation by police, Rashtriya Rifles as well as CRPF near Bihibagh in 2015.
He was kept in Central Jail Srinagar where from a member of three cops led by a head constable drove him for a medical check-up in SMHS. Police said a group of at least two militants were waiting for him and as soon as he came out of the vehicle, they were fired upon.
“Naveed himself snatched a weapon and fired and finally fled away,” a senior police officer said. “A manhunt has been launched in the entire belt to re-arrest the militant.”
“Six detainee were being brought from Central Jail. Out of them, one snatched weapons from police and fired at the protection party. One policeman is critically injured and another is injured. The prisoner’s name is Naveed. He is probably an outsider,” said Srinagar SSP Imtiaz Ismail Parray after the incident.
Within seconds after the sensational escape, the police and other security agencies have cordoned off the hospital and right now searches are going on.
