Militants hunt out PDP workers; Thrash them with sticks

Srinagar, August 10: This past Sunday turned out to be a nightmare for the workers of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s hometown of Bijbehara. Militants reportedly targeted PDP workers, thrashed them and forced them to apologise and resign from the party according to a report in the Tribune.

The militants sieved through several localities, literally hunting out by going door to door in search of PDP workers in Anantnag.

According to reports four armed militants went looking for PDP workers living in Baba Mohalla, Feroz Shah Mohalla, New Colony and Saraf Mohalla and upon finding them, thrashed them inside their houses.

“Four armed militants entered Baba Mohalla at around 9 pm and thrashed the PDP workers inside their houses with sticks,” said an eyewitness. Later, the militants moved to other localities and attacked PDP workers, he added as quoted by the aforementioned daily.

Following the baptism with fire, at least eight PDP workers issued an apology swearing to resign from the party.

SSP Anantnag, Zubair Ahmad refused to comment on the issue.

The incidents in Bijbehara were confirmed by Sajad Mufti, the chief coordinator of the PDP in south Kashmir and cousin of the Chief Minister.

“I cannot say if they were militants and who did it. You know how the situation is across Kashmir these days,” he said.
