Srinagar: Authorities on Thursday launched a crackdown on Hurriyat (M) ahead of the party’s proposed seminar at its Rajbagh headquarters in Srinagar, said a spokesman.
He said that the chief of the amalgam Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and several other leaders were placed under house arrest to prevent their participation in the “important seminar” where the party said that the future course of action vis-à-vis the freedom struggle was to be discussed.
“Police placed Mirwaiz and other leaders including Javaid Mir and spokesman of the amalgam advocate Shahid-ul-Islam under house arrest early morning today,” said a Hurriyat leader.
The amalgam had organised a seminar on present political situation, human rights violations in kashmir and the harrasment of kashmiri students in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, the seminar is being chaired by Prof Abdul Gani Bhat as some other leaders who managed to reach the Rajbagh headquarters.
