As a precautionary measure, the administration today morning blocked mobile internet services in Srinagar, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts to avoid rumour mongering among people which could lead to another Handwara like incident. Applications like whatapp and messenger services were blocked in these areas as protests erupted in Kupwara over allegations of molestation by an army soldier.
However, the army has released a video in which the Kashmiri girl has made it clear that it was local boy who slapped and abused her and there was no soldier involved in the incident. The security forces said that the soldiers had to open fire when 500 protesters surrounded the army post and tried to burn it. In the melee a youth named Nayeem Bhatt and two other were killed and that has sparked off major protests.
Villagers in Handwara clashed with security forces, defied the curfew orders and threw stones at the security forces. The separatists meanwhile have called for a daylong strike to protest against the incident.
Meanwhile, state chief minister Mehbooba Mufti who met PM Narendra Modi in Delhi said that Handwara incident would negatively impact peace in the region.
