In the last 50 years Jammu has grown manifold but the infrastructure in the city has remained static particularly the mass transport system has not improved. The Jammu bus stand is a living problem of how failure to expand the infrastructure has ensured that the city remains choked with buses, pollution is rampant, and there are too many vehicles parked in the heart of the city. The plan of J&K government to shift the bus stand by bifurcating it to Khanpur near Nagrota, and to Narwal but these measures have failed. It has now recently been reported that government has come up with a plan to modernize the existing bus stand on BC Road. A multilevel car parking, and other facilities such as food court, shopping malls, and restaurants have been proposed to be built to de-congest the bus stand, and provide adequate facilities to both tourists, and local residents both of whom are suffering equally.
It is important that this project is completed on time as majority of the infrastructure projects in Jammu province never move ahead after the stone laying ceremony. Whether it’s roads, sewerage treatment plants at Tawi, cleaning of Tawi river, saving the Mubarak Mandi complex all projects are delayed because of the respective state governments have paid no heed to this region. The modernization of the Jammu bust stand is a project which should be fast tracked as viability of Jammu as tourist destination is being ruined because of too much congestion and lack of parking in the heart of the city. The number of cars, cabs and buses have increased manifold and to provide adequate space to them is crucial for smooth running of the city.
