An emotional prime minister-designate Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed his gratitude to his party’s leader and dedicated the new government to the people of the country after he was unanimously elected the leader of the BJP parliamentary party.
“We are sitting here in the temple of democracy. We are not here for any positions, but to fulfill responsibilities,” Modi told the gathering.
He expressed his gratitude to the leaders of the party and specially thanked Advani and Rajnath for giving him their “blessings”.
“Today I’m standing before you as the son of a poor man. This is the strength of democracy.”
“Sarkar vo ho jo gareebon ke liye soche, jo gareebon ki sune, jo gareebon ke liye jiye, nayi sarkar gareebon ke liye samarpit hai,” said Modi.
Modi, who led the saffron party to a spectacular victory in the Lok Sabha elections, was earlier elected as the leader amid chants of “Bharat Mata ki jai” and a standing ovation.
BJP president Rajnath Singh announced Modi as the leader of the BJP parliamentary board after senior leader LK Advani proposed the name of “popular” and “famous” leader.
“This is a historic moment in the politics of India,” said Rajnath Singh.
Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Venkaiah Naidu and Nitin Gadkari also supported the proposal for electing Modi.
Advani, who embraced Modi after he was chosen as the leader of BJP parliamentary party, got emotional as he greeted the Gujarat strongman.
The prime minister-designate will meet President Pranab Mukherjee later in the day to stake claim to form the new government.
This will be followed by a meeting of NDA allies. A 15-member delegation of the NDA will call on Mukherjee on Tuesday afternoon to convey to him its decision about making Modi the leader of the alliance.
Immediately after the NDA delegation meets Mukherjee, Modi will call on the President at 3:15pm, President’s press secretary Venu Rajamony said.
The 63-year-old prime minister-to-be will meet Mukherjee in the company of NDA leaders after his election as leader of the grouping which will enable the President to appoint him to the post.
The meeting will be held at the Central Hall of Parliament. Modi is likely to be sworn in by the weekend.
The NDA delegation will comprise of BJP president Rajnath Singh and senior party leaders LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi.
Leaders from alliance partners will include Akali Dal’s Parkash Singh Badal and Sukhbir Singh, TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu, Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray, LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan and Neiphu Rio of Naga People’s Front.
Other BJP leaders who will be part of the NDA delegation include Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari, Ananth Kumar and TC Gehlot.
According to reports, as the race for key posts in the Modi government intensified BJP president Rajnath Singh may get the home portfolio while Arun Jaitley could be the new finance minister.
Reports also said that Murli Manohar Joshi could be chosen as the defence minister and party patriarch LK Advani could be asked to guide the party.
