Mufti Mohammad Sayeed – A life of 79 years (Timeline)

Founder of People’s Democratic party and two times Chief Minister of the state Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi on Thursday (January 07) morning. He was just 6 days away from his 80th Birthday.

He was known as the Grand Old Man of Jammu & Kashmir Politics. Here is a brief journey of his almost 80 years of life:

  • On Jan 12, 1936, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was born to a family of Peers, an influential class of clergymen, at Baba Mohalla in Bijbehara town of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
  • He did his schooling from hometown and nursed political ambitions since early age He was also school union president.
  • He graduated from SP College, Srinagar and then joined Aligarh Muslim University. He obtained a  graduate degree in law and did post-graduation in Arab History.
  • In 1959, he returned to Anantnag and started practice as lawyer.
  • In 1962, he got elected to Assembly from Bijbehara on Congress ticket.
  • In 1967, he retained the seat and was appointed Deputy Chief Minister by Chief Minister GM Sadiq.
  • In 1972, he became Cabinet Minister under CM Syed Mir Qasim and later got elected Congress Legislative Council Leader.
  • In 1975, he took over as Congress Legislature Party Leader & Congress state chief. He held this post for over 10 yrs.
  • In 1986, he was appointed Union Tourism Minister by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
  • In 1987, he left Union Cabinet as well as Congress following the Rajiv-Farooq Accord.
  • In 1989, he joined Jan Morcha led by late VP Singh. He made Union Home Minister after winning Lok Sabha seat from Muzaffarnagar (UP). It was the year when militancy erupts in J&K.
  • On Dec 8, 1989 i.e five days after becoming minister, JKLF militants kidnapped his daughter Rubaiya Sayeed in Srinagar who got released after J&K government releases five militants on Dec 13.
  • The year 1996 saw Mufti’s return to J&K politics. He rejoined Congress in this year.
  • In 1998 he was elected an MP from Anantnag on Congress ticket.
  • In 1999, he quit Cong and formed PDP (People’s Democratic party).
  • In Oct 2002, he led first PDP-Congress coalition government.
  • In Nov 2005, he resigned as CM and as per pact, he paved way for Ghulam Nabi Azad as CM.
  • On June 28, 2008, PDP withdrew support to govt over Amaranth land transfer row.
  • On March 1, 2015, Mufti began second innings as CM of J&K.
  • On Dec 24, he got admitted to AIIMS, Delhi, after he complained of chest pain, uneasiness.
  • On Jan 7, 2016, he breathed his last, six days ahead of 80th birthday.
