Municipal polls: J&K Govt likely to issue notification in coming week for elections
The J&K Government will issue a notification for the urban local bodies elections in the state shortly.
One of the top officials of the Chief Electoral Office Jammu and Kashmir on condition of anonymity that notification is likely to be issued in next week for the urban local body elections.
A day after National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah announced boycott of panchayat and urban local bodies elections, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), J&K, Shaleen Kabra said on Thursday that they (election department) would be issuing a notification for holding the municipal polls shortly.
“We will be issuing a notification shortly,” the CEO responded when asked whether the polls would be conducted in the view of a fresh controversy over the NC president’s announcement that his party would boycott elections unless the Centre and the state government clear their stand on Article 35A of the Constitution.
On August 31, the state government, headed by Governor Satya Pal Malik, had announced the long-pending panchayat and urban elections in the state beginning October 1 and culminating on December 4.
It was decided that the municipal elections would be held in four phases from October 1 to October 5, while panchayat polls would be conducted in eight phases from November 8 to December 4.
