New markets to be explored for JK’s fruit produce

SRINAGAR, MAY 19: Minister for Horticulture, Mr. Abdul Rehman Veeri has said that the government would revive the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) to ensure that only high quality fruit is exported. He also called for exploring new markets both within and outside the country to ensure better returns for J&K’s fruit produce.

This was stated by the Minister while reviewing the overall functioning of Horticulture Marketing and Planning Department at an officers meeting here today.

Veeri said the scheme would be imperative to withstand stiff market competition in the liberal trade regime as sale of mixed grades of fruit brings bad name to Kashmir’s fruit industry. He said the Government will procure C-grade apples from the growers for processing purpose and only best quality apple would be exported to the markets.

The Minister called upon the fruit growers and traders of the state to avail benefits under MIS, which provides market support to the growers, adding that no compromise on quality control of fruit would be allowed. He said fruits bought under the scheme should not be allowed to be carried outside the state in loose packs.

The Minister called upon the officers to motivate the growers and traders to ensure quality of fruit, especially the apple to fetch attractive returns for their produce. He said in the era of competition in the market the quality control is must and “we have to focus on this vital area to maintain the credibility of State’s horticulture produce”.

Mr Veeri stressed for exploring new markets to promote State’s horticulture products. He said horticulture is the mainstay of our economy and all out efforts will be made to promote this vital sector appropriately.

Calling for a well-knit and coordinated effort to achieve the targets, the Minister asked the officers to put in their best efforts to enhance the business activities in their jurisdiction.

He stressed for regular interaction between the officers and traders to sort out the issues and problems being faced by the business community associated with this trade.

The Minister said that climate control retail outlets would be set up on highway to provide quality fruits to the buyers. He said for the purpose the government would provide incentive to the unit holders. He said buyer seller       meets and fruit exhibition would be also organized in and outside the State for better marketing of the fruit production.

The Minister said the HM&P department would be reorganized and the services of Rehbar-e-Zirat would be utilized as supportive staff in Department. He said the Government would create modern infrastructure in the offices of Area Marketing Officers according to the present requirements.

During the meeting several decision were taken for making the working of the Department more vibrant.

Commissioner Agriculture Production, Dr. Asgar Samoon, Director Planning and Marketing, Director Horticulture, Kashmir and Jammu, Director Planning Agriculture Department, Managing Director JKHMPC were among others attended the meeting.
