The Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), Lt General Ranbir Singh and Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Vikas Swarup made an announcement today which has shaken the corridors not only in India but also in Islamabad. India confirmed today morning that surgical strikes were carried out by the Indian armed forces on terrorist positions along the Line of Control (Loc).

While surgical strikes as form of covert aggression was the most plausible action, the stance of India in diplomatically cornering Pakistan on the world stage had been sending feelers that India may avoid military action considering Paksitan would never agree to presence of Militant launch pads across the LoC in PoK.

The surgical strikes last night have come as a clear indication by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that India will not sit quietly in the face of adversity and it will act to neutralise any threat to the country, especially Pak-sponsored terrorism.

India’s attempts to diplomatically solve the issue of terrorism with Pakistan had repeatedly failed in the last two years alone and the statements made at UNGA by India were no different. Pakistan’s unwillingness to act on terrorists operating from its soil against India is a problem successive governments in India have face but on most occassions, no action has been taken.

The DGMO revealed that India has foiled at least 20 infiltration bids from Pakistan during this year and the Poonch and Uri terror attacks were not the last planned. He revealed that further strikes were planned against India and after Indian forces received intelligence of these terror launch pads being mobilised, Indian Army acted to neutralise them.

The next 48 hours remain critical even as villages near the International border in Punjab upto 10km have been evacuated according to ANI. A red alert has been sounded in these border areas and a similar evacuation process has been carried out across the border as well. Additional BSF troops have moved in as well.

Whether Pakistan’s response would bend along the lines of cooperation and commitment on no further attacks as Uri remains to be seen. Back in 2004, Pakistan had announced that it will not allow its soil to be used for any terror sanctuaries and terrorist activities on India. The terrorist activity has not stopped, however.

The Indian Army had recently announced that Indian forces are ready for any kind of situation and it goes without saying that the situation for over a week has remained tense between the two countries.

After voices from across the globe rose against India’s neighbour, any war-like action from Pak will place it on the lower moral ground. Both US and China have stepped in to suggest a peace process through dialogue and restrain from escalation.

Meanwhile, according to reports, US National Security Advisor Susan Rice called India’s NSA Ajit Doval affirming the US’ expectations that it will act against UN-designated terrorist entities like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad and other terrorist groups affiliated to these.
