No punishment for criminals who attempted to rape a woman

It’s been a year since five men attempted to rape a woman in Rajouri district. But unfortunately, all the five accused continue to move around freely while the victim and her family are being victimized by the authorities.

As reported in a leading daily in October last year, the victim (a middle aged women) who hails from Nowshehra district was abducted by five men who later attempted to rape her. She used all her strength and managed to flee from the clutches of criminals and straight away went to the police and narrated the entire incident.
According to her husband, due to political pressure the police took the matter lightly and registered a case of eve-teasing.
“The case was filed under sections 354/147 of RPC on 21-10-2015. As the perpetrators enjoy political patronage our department was pressurized to file a diluted case or be ready to face consequences,” a police official told the daily on the condition of anonymity.
The victim and her family, on the other hand, are living under constant fear and trauma. The victim, who works as a nurse in the Health department is allegedly being victimized.
“She hasn’t received her salary for the last one year,” said her husband.
Her husband further alleges that he has been getting threat calls to withdraw the case or face terrible ramifications .
On the other hand, victim’s daughter who had just started college at Sunderbani Degree College is unable to attend her classes as perpetrators would follow her to the college.
The SHO Rajouri police station, however, said that a case has been registered and the investigation is under process.
Meanwhile, the family has appealed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and the Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi to look into the matter.
