No Strike by Kashmiris on Burhan anniversary? Where’s the change?

On 9 July 2016, the security forces in Kashmir killed Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist, Burhan Muzaffar Wani and two of his associates. His killing brought shut-downs, protests, and strikes in Kashmir. Post his killing, every year, on 9 July, a strike call was given by the Hurriyat leaders and protests were held.

Similarly, this year also a strike call was given by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL). But there was a difference in the response of the people. Earlier people used to respond positively to the strike calls, but this year people did not care about the strike call. The roads were seen busy just like a normal day.

This change in the response of the public towards the strike calls show people are fed of being confined inside just for the fake claims of the separatist leaders. People are now looking up for a normal life. There may have been a change of mind in the people due to the hard policy of the government on the separatists particularly the Hurriyat leaders.

Probably, they are now able to see that these separatist leaders are there just to serve their personal interests. While the poor locals suffer, the children of the separatists enjoy a lavish and secure life abroad. While the government is also making efforts to solve the Kashmir issue, this development can be seen as a positive step towards achieving peace in the region as peace-building measures are a two-way road.
