Over 11000 aspirants appeared in the Jammu University Entrance Test yesterday. The exam was conducted in all three regions- Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh for admission to various undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

As many as 19 examination centres were set up by the university, for the entrance examination. A total of 1412 students appeared for undergraduate courses and as many as 9992 candidates appeared for postgraduate courses with 195 and 917 candidates absent respectively. The test was conducted at Kashmir university, Srinagar, Government Degree College Kishtwar, GDC Paloura, SPMR College of Commerce Jammu, GDC Udhampur, Jammu University Examination Hall, GDC Kathua, Dhanvantri Library, DDE, Law School, Law Department, Jammu university, GGM Science College Jammu, GDC Bhaderwah, GDC Rajouri, GDC Poonch, GCW Gandhi Nagar, GCW Parade, MAM College and GDC Leh.

Dean of Academic Affairs, Jammu University, Prof Neelam Saraf told that the test was conducted in a smooth and peaceful manner at all examination centres . The result will be declared on July 4, he told.

The JUET however, was marred by controversy over the recent changes made by the varsity. Under the new system, the university conducted JUET only to screen the candidates for admissions and successful candidates of JUET would be admitted further solely on the basis of the ‘academic merit’ in their qualifying examinations. Only 25 percent weightage will be given to the marks obtained in the entrance test while the academic merit of the qualifying examination would be 75 per cent in the admission procedure.

Previously the entrance examination conducted by the University was subject based with a common paper for all applicants of the same stream. The merit too, was calculated out of 100 marks with 70 per cent weightage to the marks obtained in the entrance exam while the academic merit would constitute only 30 per cent. The entrance test was introduced to conduct a separate subject based entrance for each course as before 2011, admissions were purely made on the basis of the academic merit.

However, the paper was simple and easy told a student, adding that the test holds no much significance this time as the weightage has been reduced to 25 percent this time. The answer key will be uploaded today as informed by the sources.
