Pakistan’s merger of Gilgit-Baltistan into mainland is a betrayal

Srinagar, January 15: The proposal of merger of Gilgit-Baltistan with Pakistan can bring some severe consequences to this long standing dispute of Jammu and Kashmir, warns Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front on Thursday.

As per reports, Pakistan has already taken possession of a large part of occupied Kashmir into its mainland and now it is all set to merge the Gilgit-Baltistan area as its fifth province.

Pertinently, Gilgit-Baltistan comprises of seven districts and is the northernmost administrative territory of Pakistan. Changing of its constitutional status is going to emerge as a major shift in Islamabad’s position on the Kashmir issue.

The London branch of JKLF held a meeting on Thursday to discuss over the issue with its functionaries in the UK and came up with the statement that the move is illegal, apolitical and immoral. There is no justification of this step and if the merger happens, people living in Kashmir will be forced to consider Pakistan on a par with India.

If asked, the move will be strongly opposed by the people of Kashmir.

Besides, the chairman of the hardline faction of the Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani has also called this planned merger of the region with Pakistan ‘a betrayal’ with the people of Kashmir

He said that the whole state of Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed territory. There is no constitutional or moral justification in making any decision on any part of this territory without the consent of its people. The merger will be the clear violation of the United Nations resolutions on Kashmir.
