Jammu: 17 September 2016, 8 Mechanised Infantry (7 PUNJAB) celebrated its 75th year of raising (Platinum Jubilee) at Khasa, Amritsar with gaiety. The battalion was raised on 05 May 1941 and has participated in ‘Burma Campaign’ of Second World War and all major operations post Independence. It is decorated with four Battle Honours to include North Arakan-1944, Buthidaung-1944, Ngyake Dauk Pass -1944, Dograi (Ichhogil) – 1965 and three Theatre Honours including Burma, Punjab and East Pakistan.
To commemorate the occasion, a large number of events were organised at Khasa, Amritsar which was attended by many senior dignitaries including Serving and Veteran 75 Ex Officers to include 14 Ex Commanding Officers, 182 Junior Commissioned Officers to include 18 Ex Subedar Majors, 206 Other Ranks and 14 Veer Naris. The sister of martyr Lt Gurcharanjit Singh, brother of martyr Lt KS Ahluwalia and the brother of martyr Lt JS Khokhar especially graced the occasion. The Ceremonial Parade organised during the occasion was reviewed by Lieutenant General Jagbir Singh, General Officer Commanding, Dakshin Bharat Area. The General addressed the parade wherein he greeted all present, he then complimented the troops for their good turnout and exceptional drill standards. The General officer also added that the battalion has a rich history and reputation in the Indian Army which has only grown with time.
After the Ceremonial Parade, a motor cycle display by ‘Dare Devils’ team from The Corps of Signal led by Captain Manpreet Singh showcased daring motorcycle stunts which left the audience spellbound and mesmerized. A band display was also organised as part of the event. Later in the day, a Special Sainik Samellan was held during which the First Day Cover was also released.
A host of other social events including Pagal Gymkhana, Barakhana etc were also organised during this momentous occasion.
