Police forced to dig out dead body of a woman in a murder case

Jammu and Kashmir News

The District Magistrate Poonch along with the local police have recovered the dead body of a middle-aged woman after exhuming it. The woman, identified as Shaheen Akhtar, was murdered and later buried by her husband and his second wife hurriedly without intimating relatives and others at the village.

A police spokesman said that ladies in the neighborhood turned suspicious and told the Karmara village Sarpanch about the abuse marks on the body of the woman and also some around her neck. The village head brought the matter to the Police.
The husband, Abdul Hamid, and his second wife had allegedly buried the body of his first wife who was mother of two boys and a girl.
Her elder son, who is 12, was sent to the jungle to get fire wood by his father. After he returned home from jungle last evening, he asked his father about his mother, to which the father replied that she suffered a heart attack that killed her and that she was buried in the grave yard. The people of the village grew suspicious about the entire matter.
SHO Poonch, Jatinder Raina, after taking special permission from the District Magistrate Poonch, M H Malik, went to the village along with a team of doctors and exhumed the dead body from the grave. After conducting the on-the-spot postmortem of the body, it was buried again, this time in presence of all the relatives and villagers with proper rituals.
The police later confirmed the torture marks on Shaheen’s body and took the husband and the second wife into custody for sustained questioning. Statements of children and relatives have also been recorded. A fresh case was registered in this connection and further investigation started. The police said that inquest proceedings will be converted into the murder case.
