Police is the main culprit behind Drug Abuse in J&K: Lal Singh

Srinagar, October 08: It is now for the second time when the health minister of the state Ch. Lal Singh has raised questions on the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s authority over various departments in the state.

During a discussion over the growing abuse of drug in J&K in the legislative assembly on Tuesday, Lal Singh said that the police is the main culprit behind the spread of the drug menace. It is pertinent to mention here that the Home portfolio has been retained by Mufti with himself.

Training guns on Police, Lal Singh said, “If there is a weak SHO, things are bound to regress. Drugs are not spread by unemployment. What has unemployment to do with a teenager student who consumes drugs?”

He said that the police need to work towards arresting the person who is providing drugs to the masses and not the people who are already fallen in the trap. There are some SHOs who have fixed rates for ensuring that the drug supply reaches its suppliers who later sell it to the youth.

It has not happened for the first time but previously on July 4, Lal Singh has confronted Mufti’s decision of relocating gynecological ward from the GB Pant Children Hospital and said that the government will continue to run it from the hospital as has been the practice.

However, some senior Home officials opposed Lal Singh’s argument and said that it is the police force which has rendered immense sacrifices for the restoration of peace in J&K. They blamed that Lal Singh in a bid to score political points, targeted police.

While on Wednesday sources confirmed that the Chief Minister has now decided to take a call over Singh’s speech and that a vital announcement in this regard would be made.
