Policeman killed, 2 soldiers injured in Kashmir gunfight


Srinagar: A police official was killed and three other people, including two soldiers and a civilian were injured on Thursday in a fierce gunfight between guerrillas and security forces in Pattan area of Kashmir’s Baramulla district, a police official said.

The senior police officer told in Srinagar that security forces on Thursday morning surrounded a house in village Hardashuru, Tangmarg, after receiving information about militants hiding there.

“As the security forces closed on the militants, they started indiscriminate firing at the security forces, triggering a shootout,” the official added.

The civilian, identified as Manzoor Ahmad, and a soldier are stated to be critical, reports reveal.

They have been shifted to hospitals for treatment.

“One SPO (Special Police Officer) has been killed and two army soldiers were injured.”

The encounter began early Thursday when a joint team of police and Army launched cordon at Hardushoora Sultanpora village after a specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

The militants hiding in the area fired on the forces, triggering a fierce encounter.

Sources added that two militants are said to be trapped in the area.
