Srinagar: One can either call it destiny or more realistically blame the infrastructure problems at the Valley’s lone tertiary care maternity hospital Lal Ded (LD). A pregnant woman got stuck in the lift of the hospital and her yet to be born baby died while being stuck.
The case came to light on Friday when the woman (name withheld) from south Kashmir was stuck in the lift in the early hours accompanied by her doctor who was taking her for surgery.
According to a senior doctor at the hospital, a technical snag in the lift caused it be to be stuck at a spot from where neither of its occupants could be extracted. Both the woman and the accompanying doctor were stuck inside for around 45 minutes.
The patient was being taken to the operation theatre as a natural delivery was not possible according to sources.
When the snag was fixed, the doctor and the woman were both rescued safely, however, the baby could not be saved.
Medical Superintendent, LD Hospital, Dr Mushtaq Ahmad said the incident would be investigated thoroughly.
The death of the child was likely due to the delay in surgery caused by being stuck in the lift.
A dead baby was removed from the uterus of the patient as per the senior doctor.
Government-run hospitals in Kashmir often face power cuts, putting the lives of patients at risk. The LD hospital is infamous for the huge rush it witnesses catering to both Kashmir and Ladakh.
