The medical health care system in India needs a drastic change with numerous dying of negligence or wrong prescriptions, and sometimes even being operated on by unqualified persons, putting lives at risk.
In the Kabir Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, administration has sealed a private hospital in Khalidabad town, after its owner was booked for operating upon a pregnant woman allegedly without a medical degree resulting in her death two hours later on Thursday. The child was a stillborn and had no chance of survival after being operated in the wrong manner. Sandeep Gupta, the owner of Siddhant Hospital, has been booked under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC at Khalilabad police station. Gupta is absconding.
On Friday, district Chief Medical Officer Dr Ajay Chand Srivastava issued notices to two doctors attached to Siddhant Hospital, inquiring if they had operated upon the deceased woman. Officials said they are yet to find any record related to the admission or treatment of any patient at the hospital, located in Khalilabad town. The body has been sent for postmortem examination and the report is awaited.
Khalilabad police Circle Officer Ramesh Kumar said that on Wednesday, Kaushal Kumar Kushwaha — a resident of Badhgo village — had rushed his pregnant wife Kushbhoo (24) to Siddhant Hospital after she complained of labour pain, reported The Indian Express.
“Hospital director Sandeep Gupta reportedly told him that he had called Dr Gaurav Pal, who is attached with the hospital, to operate upon his wife and asked him to deposit Rs 22,000,” he added. “Kaushal alleged that around 6.30 pm, Sandeep himself operated upon his wife and informed him that the child was stillborn and the condition of his wife was serious… Early Thursday, Gupta sent Khushboo to a Gorakhpur hospital in his vehicle as her condition deteriorated. But she died on way,” said Kumar.
Later, Kushbhoo’s family members and relatives created a ruckus at the hospital, accusing Gupta of operating upon the patient while he had no medical degree. Later, following a complaint by Kaushal Kumar, an FIR was lodged against Gupta. Khalilabad police Station House Officer Virendra Pratap Singh said that Gupta and the hospital staff is still absconding.
When contacted, District Magistrate Markandey Shahi said the hospital has been sealed and patients been shifted to the district hospital.
“A team of doctors, which was sent to the hospital to conduct a probe, did not find any record related to any patient being admitted there… We have issued notices to the two doctors enrolled with the hospital… If they deny conducting the operation, a notice will be served to the director of the hospital, seeking information about the person who operated upon the woman,” the CMO said.
