LMD Udhampur booked photostat shop owners  for overcharging

Udhampur Feb 26: On the directions of District Development Commissioner, Udhampur, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, the department of Legal Metrology Udhampur launched a  special drive against Photostat shops in city and booked Photostat shop owners for overcharging by promptly acting on the complaint.

The Complainant alleged that the photostat shops operating in Udhampur city were indulging in overcharging on Photostats, scans, colour printing etc. The complainant  also alleged that the photostat shops were charging Rs 20-30/- for a scan of document and for ready made forms of advertisements comprising of 5 to 10 pages, they were charging Rs 50/- whereas the prevalent rate for photostat in the same market is Rs 2/- per page.

The Field Executives under the supervision of Assistant Controller Legal Metrology Udhampur, Mr Jaideep Singh Sambyal raided various shops in the area. The complainant was found genuine and was established by a dummy consumer who approached the photostat shops on behalf of the department. Two Photostat shop owners were booked on the spot and notices were issued to others who had not maintained their bill books and their bill books were seized to ascertain veracity of cheating done to consumers.

Strict warning had also been given to the owners of the photostat shops for overcharging and were directed to display rate list in their shops. They were also instructed to give receipts to the consumers for the printing, Photostat, scan, colour printing etc.

Under Consumer protection act, 1987, overcharging is an offence and is punishable under the act.

As a result, students in Udhampur can look forward to nominal charges in the coming days. This would also mean relief for students who had to shell out a huge load of money for a few pages earlier.
