Restrictions in Srinagar to prevent pro-Pakistan rallies

Srinagar: Authorities Friday imposed restrictions in several areas of Srinagar city to prevent pro-pakistan rallies on the neighbouring country’s Independence Day.

“Restrictions have been imposed in seven areas of Khanyar, Nowhatta, Rainwari, M R Gunj, Maisuma, Kralkhud and Safa Kadal in order to maintain law and order,” a senior police officer said.

The top separatist leaders have either been placed under house arrest or detained inside police stations.

Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, the chairman of the Hurriyat (M) faction, was placed under house last evening while Hurrriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani continues to be under house arrest at his residence in Hyderpora area of the city.

JKLF chairman Yasin Malik was detained on Wednesday while he was on way to Pulwama where an unarmed civilian was allegedly killed in firing by security forces.

Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in strength in these areas where Pakistan flags are waved by youths on August 14 every year.
