Jammu, 5 May:
The employees of the Municipal Corporation are going on a strike starting today and the protests have started with a bang where major parts of the city have been polluted by residential garbage allegedly thrown on the roads by the Safai Karamcharis.
The employees began with protests outside speaker Kavinder Gupta’s official residence and then marched on foot and two wheelers towards Apsara Road and Gol Market areas.
The employees also protested outside the Municipal Office in Town Hall on Wednesday. The Safai Karamchari Union, the Driver-Cleaner Union and the Clerical Union of the department jointly took part in the demonstrations. The union leaders then declared that from 5th of May, the entire municipal department would discontinue their work.
Civic Safai Karamchari Union’s President, Rinku Gill said that the government has not been paying attention to their demands despite giving them clear notices time and again. He added that the entire city will not be cleaned unless their demands are met. They clearly made it the responsibility of the government and the JMC for the clutter in the city.
He protested saying that the employees had terminated their protests last year on 15th of December only after the government promised them fulfilment of all their requests. Despite lapse of four months, no action has been taken till now.
The employees demanded a re-election of the department. They also want scrapping of the NGO system, deployment of municipal employees in wards instead of parking lots, regularization of contractual drivers and assurance of DPC promotion orders of municipal employees of various cadres.
After the authorities failed to meet these demands, the employees have gone on a strike from today.
