The Jammu and Kashmir government would do well to save the hill resort of Gulmarg from onslaught of the encroachers and the land mafia who have connections with powerful people in the state. The bench of the J&K High Court has ordered complete ban on the construction activities as well as repair work in Gulmarg. If this order is implemented seriously it would mean that there would be no further construction at this hill resort which has a fragile ecology, and too much pressure on land, water, and air would destroy this scenic spot forever. The time has come for the municipal authorities, forest officials, and local administration to take immediate measures and stop the movement of construction material, and other related stuff from moving in and around this area. It has to be ensured that if Gulmarg and other tourist spots in state are to be saved than the directions of the court have to be submitted in letter and spirit.
In what could be termed as a stricture against the government, the High Court has also ordered that the executive engineer of the Gulmarg Development Authority be replaced with a week. What has shocked the court is open flouting of norms by trucks and tippers to transport building material which has happened in collusion with authorities. The large scale construction activities being carried out in and around major tourist spots in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakah has almost brought them to brink of disaster it is time that corrective measures are taken otherwise tourism will get a major blow in the state.
