Science workshop for middle school level girls held in rural Jaipur
A one-day three-hour workshop for middle school girls of Masterji ki Dhani habitation of Bassi block of Jaipur district in Rajasthan on January 25 was organized by Smile NGO that was supported by Bosch in which 30 girls participated. The sessions on hands-on learning of science, concept attainment and diagram making were held.
According to Kamini Shukla, the coordinator of Smile, every Sunday, workshops are held for the girls in this habitation by inviting experts in various fields besides three-hour coaching classes for the girls in science mathematics, computer science and English. For coaching the girls a classroom with white board and projector and computer lab have created in this small habitation.
For January 25 workshop, Jaipur-based science educator, Dr. Lalit Kishore was engaged who showed a few science experiments with readily available materials which were enjoyed by the participants. The concepts of sound and static electricity were explained through direct experiences. The diagram making session was enjoyed by the students since step-by-step drawing was done and practiced by students.
The participants reacted positively to the workshop on science instruction and learning by doing. They demanded more workshops of this kind which are directly related to the content they learn in their school.
