Sham-Rather lay foundation stone of Rs. 26 cr Arzan-Garzan Dam
CHRAWNI: Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood control, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma and the Minister for Finance and Ladakh Affairs, Mr. Abdul Rahim Rather today laid foundation stone of the ambitious, Rs. 26 crore Arzan-Garzan Water Storage Dam near Chrawni in Chrar-i-Sharief Constituency.
The Scheme has been approved by the Center under Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Scheme (AIBS) and would irrigate about 1600 hectares of land in eight adjacent villages including Chrawni, Zagipora, Kakawring, Malapora, Dardpora, Hayatpora, Tangnar and Chack Mahanjodur.
Besides a large number of enthusiastic people, the District Development Commissioner Budgam, Mr. Kursheed Ahmed Shah, Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control, Kashmir, Mr. Javed Ahmed, Chief Engineer PHE, Kashmir, Mr. Ahmed Muzaffar Lankar, S. E, Hydraulic, mr. Amtiyaz Ahmed and concerned executive engineers of phe, R&b irrigation and power departments and officers of the district administration were present on the occasion.
Addressing a public gathering, after laying foundation stone of the Arzan-Garzan Water Storage Dam, the Irrigation Minister said that the Agriculture Potential of the area will get optimally exploited on completion of this scheme which has been conceived on the basis of hydrological survey. He said the scheme to be completed in two years has been redesigned on the basis of latest technology, adding that all the precautionary measures have been taken to check siltation of the dam. He said that the Dam has 1.8 crore cubic water storage capacity which can also be utilized for augmenting drinking water supply in the area in lean period.
Speaking on the occasion, the Finance Minister, who is also local MLA of the area said that the Arzan-Garzan Water Storage Dam will bring a big green revolution in the area which is mostly a rain fed Karewa. He said reconstruction of the Dam was the long pending demand of the people, adding that this will enable farmers to diversify their agriculture activities with double cropping pattern that will uplift their socio-economic profile. He said the dam which has a beautiful landscape will also help to promote tourism in the area. He announced that the Government proposes to reconstruct Mallapora Dam also, adding that the irrigation department has already prepared a Rs. 50 crore DPR for this purpose.
Mr. Rather said that about 1 lakh estimated tipper and truck loads of earth to be excavated from the Dam site will be utilized to fill the wide Nallah adjacent to the Revered Shrine Hazrat Sheikh Noor-ud- Din Wali(RA) which will further add to the aesthetic ambience of shrine complex. He vowed to develop Chrar-i-Sharief as a Model Constituency.
