JAMMU: Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Sham Lal Sharma today inaugurated an awareness camp on Disaster Risk Reduction organized by National Development Foundation (NDF) Jammu at Government Boys Higher Secondary School Akhnoor here today.
Chief Functionary National Development Foundation, Rajiv Khajuria, Programme Manager NDF, Sulakshna Sharma, District Education Planning Officer, Principal of the School, faculty members, prominent citizens and a large number of students were present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Sham Lal Sharma said that awareness regarding Ways of Disaster Risk Reduction is of immense importance in today’s era when the incidence of manmade and natural disasters have substantially increased due to disturbance of ecological balance and climatic change.
The Minister said that keeping in view the situation there was a need to educate masses about how to remain prepared to face any eventuality. He stressed upon the students to take keen interest in such educative camps apart from their studies so that the preparedness of disaster risk reduction percolate down to ground level.
Mr. Sharma appreciated the efforts of NDF for developing specific sets of knowledge and practices to avoid or mitigate the effects of natural disasters. He said that the organization is closely involved in the conceptual shift in thinking away from post-disaster reaction to pre-disaster action. He said that initiative of NDP is fully consonant with priorities of International level NGOs in contributing to disaster resilience through knowledge, education, information and public awareness.
The Minister asked the teachers to organize mock drills after every quarter to sensitize students besides impart quality and value based education to the students to face the future challenge. He also asked the students to take part in sports and other curricular activities to keep themselves both physically and mentally fit.
Sham said that education sector has received focused attention of the government adding that in this regard new schools have been opened and existing are upgraded in remote and farthest areas of the state. He said that efforts are afoot to introduce Moral Science and Agriculture Science at school level.
Speakers drawn from various government educational institutions of Akhnoor town spoke and expressed their views on the topic.
Prizes and Sports kits were also distributed among best speakers and students of the government educational institutions of Akhnoor by the chief guest. The students also presented a cultural programme on the occasion.
