NEW DELHI: Three Army personnel, including a major, were martyred during an encounter with terrorists in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Thursday morning, Police said.
According to police, the three Armymen injured in the gunfight were airlifted to 92 military base hospital in Srinagar where Major Kamlesh Pandey and soldiers identified as Tenzin and Kripal Singh succumbed to bullet injuries.
“Following a tip off about the presence of terrorists in Matribugh Zoipora village of the district (Shopian), a cordon-and-search operation was launched by a joint party of 62 RR of Army, Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir police and Central Reserve Police Force,” a senior police official said.
The hiding terrorists opened fire after security forces approached the site, the police official added.
The encounter between the security forces and terrorists is currently underway.
Meanwhile, Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed the responsibility of the attack.
Earlier on Thursday, two terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Kulgam district of south Kashmir, police said.
According to the police, one of the slain terrorists was involved in an attack on a bank cash van in the district on May 1 this year in which five policemen and two bank guards were killed.
Security forces have also recovered two weapons from the site of the encounter, the official said.
