Shopian Woman set ablaze, Police fails to arrest in laws

Srinagar, August 31: Police has failed to make any arrest even after two days a women was beaten and set into fire by husband in south Kashmir’s Shopian district. As per police, any arrest has not been made in the absence of victim’s statement.

The woman named Shokey Jan who is just 24 years old has received severe burn injuries on friday and has  been battling between life and death after she was beaten up harshly and then set ablaze by her husband Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh along with his brother Mohammad Shaban Sheikh and his son Shabir at their residence in Nadigam village.

The woman’s in-laws locked her in a room after burning her to muffle her cries. However one of the neighbours heard her cries, rescued her, rushed her to the hospital and called her family. The neighbours took her to Shopian district hospital from where she was referred to SMHS Hospital in Srinagar.

As per victim’s family, the woman had been a victim of domestic violence for quite a while and according to police, any arrest has not been made in the absence of victim’s statement.

“We are monitoring her situation closely at the hospital. A case has been prepared and the only formality is the woman’s statement,” Shopian SP Altaf Khan said.
