Jammu and Kashmir
Jammu, April 16: The Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) have initiated a major step against people using social media to instigate masses by circulating videos and morphed pictures to whip up public passion.
The police in both the divisions of Jammu and Kashmir have established a special cell in the Police Control Room (PCR) and telephone numbers have been advertised to allow people to ascertain the facts.
Social media, especially Whatsapp, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook, have emerged as an important platform for overground workers (OGWs) of militants to further their anti-India thoughts.
Mostly influenced by the Islamic State and the Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) terror ideology inflammatory speeches, morphed images and videos are being circulated, particularly in Kashmir, whenever there is any controversial issue.
A senior police officer claimed that some of the Facebook pages being operated from the UK, US, Pakistan and the UAE had been tracked down and most of their administrators were Kashmiris based in these countries.
Even some members of right wing groups in Jammu were also under scanner for circulating explicit communal content creating hustle within the state, he said.
KB Jandyal, former Director, Information, J&K.Sub-Inspector Ajay Angotra, working with the Cyber Cell of the Police Department, said the matter falls in the general crime category and if a complaint is registered in a police station immediate action is taken to identify the individuals.
Angotra said, people should confirm directly from the police about any incident rather than believing whatever is circulated in social media.
