Sri Budha Amarnath pilgrims attacked; clashes ensue

Poonch, August 17: Atleast eleven pilgrims of Sri Buddha Amarnath were injured when some anti-social elements started throwing stones on vehicles ferrying the pilgrims. Half-a-dozen vehicles were damaged in this stone-pelting event and more than 8,000 pilgrims are still stranded at the shrine.

Tribune reported that tension erupted in Mandi town when locals expressed their objections to “provocative” slogans shouted by a group of pilgrims. The locals entered into a scuffle with the pilgrims, local shops were forcibly shut down by local youth and large number of locals immediately reached the spot with counter sloganeering.

Also, the locals allegedly pelted stones on the vehicles carrying pilgrims resulting in injuries to about a dozen pilgrims.

The police had to intervene and the law and order situation was brought under control.
